Skills - a Systematic Approach
David
Cotton’s presentation is on Writing Skills for academic purposes. He will
discuss why students have difficulty writing academic texts, such as essays,
reports and articles. He will then talk about the approach to writing which he
and his co-writers have used in the Language Leader course books. He will look
at the various writing genres which students need to master to be successful in
their studies at colleges and universities and will use examples from the
intermediate – advanced levels of Language Leader to illustrate his points. One
or two examples of students’ work will also be presented. David will not deal
with scholarly articles written for academic journals though this topic is
covered, to some extent, in the Language Leader series.
11:30 – 12:00 – Irina Tverdokhlebova,
associate professor, head of English Phonetics Chair, Moscow City
Teacher Training
University.
The speaker intends to consider in what ways cultural factors are bound
with students' language production in the classroom and examine how these
factors influence the ways Russian students learn to write and speak in an
academic variety of English.
12:00 – 12:20 – Zhenya Bakin, CELTA-qualified
teacher, Academic Writing Centre director at Higher School of Economics
The speaker will give a talk on some applications of
the Internet at English language classes.
12:20 – 13:20 – David Cotton. Speaking Skills in an international
environment
David Cotton will
focus on new elements in Market Leader 3rd edition which develop
students’ ability to become fluent users of English and to master the business
communication skills which they need to perform effectively in an international
business environment. He will select examples from Market Leader Intermediate –
Advanced to show that the course provides a wide-ranging approach to speaking
skills and that the activities in the book reflect the technological changes
that are taking place in modern business communication.
